Is It Time To Visit A Pediatric Clinic? Warning Signs

February 1, 2022

Pediatric Clinic

A pediatric clinic is not exactly the happiest place on earth for a child. It’s a common scenario to find yourself dealing with a crying or screaming child. However, as much as you’d rather not deal with your child crying, there are times when visiting the local pediatrician is necessary. It is crucial that we are aware of these times. Below are some warning signs to watch out for, so you can determine if a visit to a clinic is needed.

Fever

Fevers are always a concern, no matter the age of the patient. For babies under two months old, a rectal temperature equal to or higher than 100.4⁰ F requires emergency attention. Proceeding to the emergency room is the best course of action in case of high fevers in infants. High fevers may be a symptom of a more serious condition like an infection. To know the exact cause of your baby’s fever, the pediatrician will have to run a few laboratory tests.

For older children, the handling of their fevers will also depend on other symptoms. Aside from checking your child’s temperature, consider other factors like duration and behavior. Most childhood fevers can be treated at home with a day’s rest. However, if their fever persists even after resting for a day or two, you must bring them to a pediatric clinic. If your child is also showing alarming behavior such as lack of appetite or irritability, it might also be a good idea to have them checked immediately. Make sure to ask if your child is feeling any pain or discomfort. If it is concentrated on a particular area of their body, it might be a sign of infection.

Colds

Colds are common among children. A child can catch the typical cold several times a year, and each can last a few days to a week. Severe cold symptoms can be tricky to identify, but it is important that you do. Here are some indications you can watch out for:

  • Persisting fever
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Ache on the face
  • Wheezing

If you notice any of these symptoms accompanying your child’s cold, get medical help as soon as possible.

Diarrhea And Vomiting

Both diarrhea and vomiting can also be a common occurrence in children. These symptoms are usually brought about by stomach viruses and can be eased with proper rest and hydration. However, if symptoms last for 24 hours or more with no signs of relief, contact a pediatric clinic immediately. Other signals to watch out for are:

  • Dry and cracked lips
  • Dark-colored urine
  • Sunken eyes
  • Less pee or inability to pee
  • Blood or black specks in stool
  • Soft and sunken spot on the head for babies less than 18 months old

If your child has any blood or black-colored specks in their stool or vomit, get emergency help immediately. It can be a sign of severe inflammation.

Rashes

Rashes can come in different forms and have various causes. Some common rashes include:

  • Blister-like rashes
  • Rashes with oozes or weeps
  • Rashes that look like a target or bull’s eye mark
  • Swollen bumps
  • Itchy rashes
  • Discolored rashes

If your child’s rash is accompanied by swelling, make sure to see a doctor right away, as this can be a sign of an allergic reaction. Also, get immediate help if your child’s rash comes with a fever, as this can be a sign of infection.
